This week on Starry Sky and Witchy Things we are talking about the 8th house, which in ancient Hellenistic astrology was called ‘the inactive place’ or ‘the idle place’. It is said to signify ‘death’, ‘inheritance’, and ‘the assets of others’, or ‘money or financial matters involving others’.
In Modern astrology it’s equated with Scorpio and ruled by Pluto, which has an association to wealth. There’s a connection between Hades and Pluto and Pluton even if they are separate deities depending on who you ask, and there’s a strong association to the underground wealth of precious stones and the likes.
The Orphic Hymn to Hades mentions the wealth of the land, which also comes from below the ground. Another modern signification is power, which can be seen as a background theme of everything we spoke of so far, but to me feels very linked to how those who have money in our society have the balance of power in their favour. So then it becomes an extension of that.
Also it’s the house in opposition to the 2nd which is our possessions, and because the 8th is succedent to the 7th there is a big theme of partner’s money in it too, but that’s not the only kind of other people’s money. For example you’d see active 8th houses in charts of people building big businesses that require venture capital or loans. Taxes are also a topic for the 8th house.
But it can also be other forms of inheritance that are not directly money, like someone passing on their clients to you, or even health issues that have a genetic component can show up as a signification of the 8th house.
However, I had an opening to invite one of my favourite people on the show, and so I took it.
