I checked my emails before I started working on this week’s episode, and these words from Sarah Faith Gottesdiener from the Moon Studio felt relevant to the theme:
“This second Capricorn Full Moon wants us to check in on our foundations.
Yes, in the material: our bodies, our bones, the way we stand on earth.
Yes, in the spiritual: our callings and shakiness, our ancestors and invisible helpers. The archetype of Capricorn is as pragmatic as it is etheric. This is a time for honesty and courage. Reorganisation and organisation is taking place on the cellular level. Can you feel it? If you’re a conscious cycle breaker, this Full Moon also seems to be a lot about breaking old, old patterns: the ones that are passed down from our ancestors, the ones that live in our bones. What patterns do you want to hold onto? What shapes and structures must morph, shift, or disintegrate?
All patterns are shifted through practice.”
Of all the signs, I feel like the 10th house is one of those where the Modern Astrology tendency to equate sign and house is actually spot on. The 10th house of career and legacy, opposite the 4th house of family and ancestry, is Capricorn energy. It’s ambition and climbing to the heights, as in the quadrant houses it’s ushered by the Midheaven which is the public peak of the house and the theme of my most recent workbook I just released.
Anyway, there is a side to Capricorn that was mirrored back to me by someone I know socially, who said “Capricorn know how far they can go, and set realistic higher goals, they’re not big dreamers who end up achieving nothing because they’re like risk management officers”. And I believe this element of long-term vision is why Capricorn and the 10 house feed off each other. It’s like Malcolm Tucker, with or without the colourful Scottish insults, who for those unfamiliar with British political comedies is the Director of Communications for a political party in the satirical TV show The Thick of It.
Commonly referred to as spin doctors, their actual role is to predict the reactions to policy announcements and manage their framing accordingly. It’s often seen in the negative, as manipulating public opinion or spreading propaganda, but there are situations where controlling the narrative with a more positive spin on it is can be beneficial, as parents would attest.
In traditional Hellenistic astrology the whole house was considered the Midheaven which leads to some confusion with modern practitioners who use whole sign houses and talk about how the Midheaven can fall in the 9th to the 11th house, meaning the angle itself can fall in any of the 3 houses because it’s not the cusp of the 10th like in the quadrant systems.
As one of the Angular houses it has a strong and obvious link to the first house which is the house of self, and in the case of its signification it becomes the self’s role in the collective, which is the theme underlying the final quarter.
Specifically, it signifies ‘career’, ‘actions’, ‘reputation’, and ‘public life’. One of the words in Greek, specifically the one translated as actions in this list, is praxis, meant as what you occupy your time doing. It’s anything that you do or try to do in order to achieve a goal of some kind, an overarching preoccupation with who we are as a person. There’s intentionality, often over a longer period of time. And there is reputation, what you’re known for, or as we’d call it in the modern age our personal brand.
There is also tension between the self and broader society in this house, although the conversation I had with India of the magical duo By the Brujas was the most positive outlook on what this house represents that I could have possibly found.
We talked about healing, connecting with our ancestry, and how this impacts the legacy we leave behind. The importance of community also features heavily in this conversation. It was powerful, although we discuss things like racism that may be triggering so listener’s discretion advice.
