This week on Starry Sky and Witchy Things, the topic was the 9th house, or ‘the place of the god’, which is where in traditional astrology the Sun has its joy.
It’s the best of the Cadent houses, since it aspects the ascendant in a superior trine and its significations are largely common to both traditional and modern astrology. We see ‘travel’ (especially foreign or long distance travel), ‘foreign things’ (like foreign people or foreign places), ‘education’ (especially higher education), and also, ‘religion’, including theosophy and the other branches of the occult that are a ceremonial tradition.
For the ancients, planets in the 9th were a sure sign you’d have a career in the temple. So that’s where we get the signification of philosophy in modern times, when we are far less attached to the God that has its joy in this house.
For Valens even divination and mysticism fell in the 9th, while in modern times that’s more of a 12th house thing. You can see pilgrimages in the 9th house too, which is one of the themes of the guest episodes.
And the themes of the 9th house compared to the 3rd are about expansion: the underlying theme of the 9th is the quest for truth. Which is hard to pursue if all you’re ever preoccupied with is your backyard two roads down from your parents. But there is no prescription (whatever my friend Virgo-chan believes) that you should actually move to be preoccupied with bigger things.
And you also have a quest for meaning signified in the 9th house. And the religious aspects go both ways, it doesn’t have to be pro-religion. A strong preoccupation with atheism where you actually spend time arguing against religion is also a 9th house topic.
Publishing something as a one off can also be seen in the 9th house, and this one perked my attention the most because if you didn’t know, I’m writing a spiritual memoir.
My first guest for the 9th house was Mother Malia. We recorded this conversation back in April, so the collective landscape was not the same as now and a lot of what we discussed was wealth consciousness, but there are aspects to what we talked about that feel even more poignant now.
The topic, broadly speaking, was the connection to the divine. I have a difficult relationship with ideas of an ultimate divinity, even if I’m undoubtedly more woo than a lot of people who come from the secular witchcraft space, and so it was a pleasure to, in the spirit of the 9th House, broaden my horizons.
